The Philadelphia 76ers had a busy summer. They were forced to trade Jimmy Butler to Miami and got back Josh Richardson in return. While Richardson is probably as defensively inclined as Butler if not more so, he is no where near the offensive player that Butler is. Richardson can be more of a facilitator, especially on the pick and roll. He was Miami’s go to guy last season so he will provide some offense a well, just don’t expect him to deliver Butler’s Numbers.
Butler being gone will open things up for Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid a bit more. It seemed either Simmons was on or Butler was, but both couldn’t be on because their mutual need of the ball. In that way Butler leaving is a good thing. Also, with Al Horford coming to town, there will be more of an emphasis of the front court on offense. Horford and Embiid will be potent together. The 76ers were able to resign Tobias Harris which will help give them one of the best starting lineups in the east.
Their bench is another story. Sure, they have Jonah Bolden who should have a break out season, along with Zhaire Smith. Kyle O’Quinn and Mike Scott help to solidify the front court to some extent. I guess James Ennis isn’t chopped liver. Rookie Matisse Thybulle could prove interesting if he can adjust to the NBA. He is a lock down defender with raw athletic talent. He is 36% shooter from three, but still needs work on his choices on offense. He will likely get minutes in his rookie season. The 76ers brought in Raul Neto and Trey Burke who will battle for backup point guard. So, they have some pieces, but it will all depend on how they fit together. As it is, the 76ers will be in 2nd this year or so with Leonard leaving Toronto, Boston getting a bit worse, and Brooklyn waiting for Durant to heal.
