The Orlando Magic are one of few teams that didn’t make dramatic changes during the offseason, staying put and adding on a few complimentary players. They have yet to sign draft pick Chuma Okeke, and probably won’t till next season, to let him heal from a ACL injury that occurred while he was playing in the NCAA tournament with the Tigers. It will be worth the wait, as the young Power forward has vast potential, and may be one of the steals of the draft. He is a force on both ends of the floor, especially the defensive end. He is the ideal stretch four for the Orlando Magic.
DaQuan Jefferies will likely take the 15th spot on the team for the season. An athletic 3 and D wing out of Tulsa, more than proved his worth in summer league. He is a high IQ player, who can pass and facilitate as well as score and defend. He is a hell of a defender. A guy with that kind of engine belongs on a NBA roster.
The Magic signed forward Al Farouq Aminu in the dawning hours of free agency. Portland played him near exclusively at power forward and he could still play some 4 behind Aaron Gordon, but he will likely start at the 3 and split minutes between the forward positions, pushing Fournier back to shooting guard.
The Magic not only made the playoffs last season, but surprised many by winning game 1 in their series with the future champion Raptors, led by point guard DJ Augustin. All Star center Nikola Vucevic struggled in the playoffs, but resigned in a lucrative contract with the Magic anyways. How much does adding Aminu and perhaps Jefferies move the needle? A little twinge…a couple wins tacked on probably and another playoff spot. But, they will have to fight for it.
The Magic have given away so many Jewls like Victor Oladipo and diamonds in the rough like Maurice Harkless and Shabazz Napier, but they are holding tight to guys like Jonathan Isaac, Wesley Iwundu, and the capable Mohamed Bamba. Maybe keeping those cards close to their chest will pay off. We should see an uptick in their level of play this season…or so the Magic hope.
